Why Gutter Machine Maintenance Matters

Some simple maintenance steps can help your team maintain your gutter machine for a longer period and help ensure consistent machine performance.  For more on optimal machine performance, explore KWM's guide on operating seamless gutter machines

  • Machine Manual and Safety Labels: Be sure to read the gutter machine’s manual and observe safety labels on the gutter machine prior to operation or routine maintenance.

Simple Maintenance Tasks for Gutter Machines

This section outlines key maintenance tasks to ensure that your gutter machine is clean, debris-free, and well-lubricated.

  1. Cleaning Your Gutter Machine

Inspecting for and cleaning debris from your gutter machine is recommended with daily operation. Keeping your machine clean helps keep gutter production running smoothly.

  • Safety Considerations: Always start by unplugging the machine and then removing the top safety lids and covers.
  • Step-by-Step Cleaning Instructions:
    1. Disconnect the machine from power.
    2. Remove safety covers & lids to access internal components.
    3. Inspect the machine for debris, loose nuts, and/or bolts.
    4. Use a vacuum or blower to clear debris from the machine.
    5. Lightly clean drive rollers using acetone and a cloth. Rotate rollers manually (with the machine unplugged) to clean fully. Avoid harsh chemicals and never apply lubricant to rollers.
    6. Reinstall safety cover and lids before plugging the machine back in.

By following these cleaning steps, you can keep your KWM gutter machine operating at peak efficiency. For full instructions and visuals, check out our how to clean your gutter machine.

    2.       Gutter Machine Lubrication and Adjustment

Maintaining proper lubrication and making timely adjustments are good routine maintenance tasks for keeping your machine in top condition.

  • Lubricating Guillotine Blade: Lubricate the guillotine blade with WD-40 daily (blade down). Cycle the blade a few times, avoiding roller contact.
  • Lubricating Drive Chains: Lubricate drive chains only if needed (once per year). A little goes a long way. Don’t let any type of lubricant contact the rollers in your machine.
  • Gear-Box Oil Levels: Inspect annually. The gear oil level should be even with the bottom of the inspection hole.
  • Adjusting Feed Rollers and Shear Chains: Regularly inspect and adjust feed rollers and shear chains to prevent misalignment and wear. Refer to the machine's manual for specific adjustment procedures.

    3.       Proper Gutter Machine Storage, Transport, & Protection from Elements

A few practical practices can go a long way in keeping your machine running smoothly.

  • Safety Covers & Lids: Always keep covers and lids on machines during transportation, operation, and storage. The covers are for the operator's safety. Not only will the covers protect the operator against injury, but they will also protect the machine from outside elements.
  • Proper Storage: Store machines in a dry, secure, indoor area when not in use.
    • Outdoor Storage Not Recommended: If the gutter machine must be stored outside, which is not recommended, tarp the machine loosely to provide sufficient ventilation to prevent condensation.
  • Safe Handling & Transport: Keep covers and lids on machine during transportation also. Do not transport or store machine with gutter coil in it. The forming rollers have adequate spacing, so they will not meet. The polyurethane drive rollers do not need to be protected from each other.
